[edit] IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE ORDERING

You MUST determine which cover to buy. There are two versions. 8 Screws, or 10 Screws. Flip your PS2 upside down and count the little squares (They cover the screws)
You MUST determine which cover to buy. There are two versions. 8 Screws, or 10 Screws. Flip your PS2 upside down and count the little squares (They cover the screws)

~If You count 10, you have a Version 1, 2, or 3 PS2, and MUST order a 10 screw Flip Top
~If you count 8, you have a Version 4, 5, 6 or 7 PS2, and MUST order an 8 screw Flip Top
~If you order the Wrong Top, it is NOT GUARANTEED to work. Don't even risk it, order the right one.

~For the record, the above PS2 is an 8 screw PS2. The extra 2 screws would be at the bottom of the picture (2 Circles at the Bottom), but this PS2 does NOT have them.

Now that you've either ordered or have your Flip Top, you need Installation Instructions. We've included our own right here on this site which are very detailed.

[edit] Installation

1) Remove Screw Covers with Any Flat Head Screwdriver
1) Remove Screw Covers with Any Flat Head Screwdriver
>2) IMPORTANT: After you remove screws and covers, lay them out in EXACTLY the same was as they were in the PS2. This way you don't forget where they go. If you do forget, the long screws go into the thicker side of the PS2 (right side)

3) You must remove this sticker on the back of your PS2 before you can open it. HOWEVER, doing so voids your warranty. If you're installing a Flip Top, this shouldn't bother you, but important information nonetheless

4) Turn your PS2 right-side up (Normal Horizontal Position) and lift the BACK END of the PS2 about 3 INCHES STRAIGHT UP. DO NOT try to lift the entire cover straight up, it simply won't. DO NOT lift it too much, it could damage the front of your system (CD tray, Controller Ports)

6) DO NOT PULL THE TOP OFF. Tilt it to the right until the Reset/Eject Silver Wire is visible. It will be taped to the top of the CD/DVD Drive. Peel the tape off the tray carefully and set your top right next to the PS2 Bottom

7) This is what you should see. Your Reset/Eject Wire almost acting like a bridge between the top and bottom. Do NOT remove the Wire from either side at any point.

8) Remove the Reset/Eject Button unit by using a Flat Head Screwdriver. Slide the tip where the arrow shows (Not where the Screwdriver is in the picture, although that does work, just not as easily), and tilt the screwdriver up. The Reset/Eject Unit will pop straight up, off it's posts.

10) Remove the Memory Card Door Covers by removing the screw in the center of the Unit, where the arrow points. REMEMBER HOW THE DOOR COVER SPRINGS ARE SET UP. If you Re-Install it incorrectly in the Flip Top, The covers may not swing open/closed correctly. Once the Door Covers are off, you are done with the top of the case. We Recommend keeping it somewhere in a plastic Ziploc Bag, in addition to other parts we'll add later. You may want to put all the Original Hardware back on at a later time.

11) Remove the 4 screws from the CD/DVD Tray cover. These screws are smaller than the case screws, and may require a screwdriver with a smaller head than you were previously using. When the cover is removed, place the screws in the Ziploc bag with the case, and lace the cover next to the PS2.

12) On the CD/DVD Tray cover, there is a white disc. This is MANDATORY, and needs to be transferred to the flip top. It prys out easily with a flat head screwdriver. You COULD break it, but it's highly unlikely. With the disc off, place the CD/DVD Tray cover in the Ziploc bag with it's screws, and the PS2 top. Store those in a safe place, as you may require them in the future.

14) This is your Flip top. This Flip Top has been painted chrome. It was originally black. I did NOT paint the section where the white disc will go, as I didn't want anything to impede it's work, or paint getting chipped off. Place the white disc from the CD/DVD Tray into the Flip Top in the opposite way you removed it. It should snap into place with a light push.

16) Turn your Flip Top upside down, and place the Reset/Eject Unit into the flip top in the same way it was on the original top. You'll notice that it doesn't sit firmly in the Flip Top. This should be fixed in future Flip Tops, but there is a fix.

17) You need to find an Extra Screw. Any screw should work fine, the one above (LEFT) is from a PSone Console. You can see how it compares, size-wise, to a PS2 Case Screw (RIGHT). Find a screw approximately the same size. Certain PC Case screws also work. The Shorter the better, but not too short. Too long may damage the top of the Flip Top (The screw may make a bump in the top if it's too long)

18) Take your new screw and screw the Reset/Eject Unit securely into the Flip Top. There are 2 holes available, but you MUST put it into the hole in the picture (The one farthest from the Reset/Eject buttons). The other hole (The one closest to the buttons) is needed for a case screw.

19) Now, Put your Memory Card Door Covers back on in the reverse way you took them off. I found it easier to put it on by putting the doors on first, then the holder. MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE SPRINGS IN CORRECTLY, or they may not Open/Close correctly. This is why I told you earlier to pay attention to them.

20) It's Time to put your Flip Top on the PS2. Unfortunetely, Your Reset/Eject Wire needs to be moved to the side of the CD/DVD Tray since it can no longer be taped to the top. Most people tape it to the side of the CD/DVD Tray, like this. You could tape it to the side of the Flip Top, but this way is better.

21) Now, Put the Flip Top on the PS2 in the reverse way you took off the original top. Slide it forward with the back end elevated 3 INCHES, then push the back end down. IMPORTANT: Loop your Reset/Eject wire OUTSIDE the post of the Flip Top, the arrow points to the post. If the post comes down on the wire, it could pinch it. Make sure the wire clears the post, this is CRUCIAL!

23) Close the Flip Top lid and turn your PS2 over. It's time to put the case screws back in. If you put them aside in the same way they came out, this is easy.

[edit] Testing your Fliptop

You've Completed the Installation of the Flip Top. It's time to make sure your PS2 still works, and test the Flip Top.

Import/Backup Game Requirements:

~PS2 Imports Need Swap Magic Discs

~PS2 CD Backups need the CD Swap Magic Disc

~PS2 DVD Backups need the DVD Swap Magic Disc

~PSone Imports and Backups require a Breaker Pro Disc or Gameshark. Gameshark 2 version 2.0 works, as does Gameshark Lite. It's believed that any Gameshark CD-based device that loads PSone games will work. This is UNTESTED.
If NONE of these play your PS2 Import or Backup, there are instructions at the bottom of the page on what to do.

1) Place your Swap Magic disc into the CD/DVD Tray. Push it down in the CENTER of the disc. The disc must be UNDER THE LIP on the left side of the tray. If it's in correctly, you should be able to spin it by twisting your fingers while pressing in the middle of the disc. If it's not in correctly, it won't spin. Your disc will come loose when you start the PS2 and the system will make a strange sound. If it doesn't spin, turn the PS2 off and try again, DO NOT TRY TO PUSH IT DOWN WHILE THE PS2 IS ON, you could mess up your drive motor after repeated use. This process will probably take a few times to get right when you first start out.

2) Close the Flip Top lid. The lid is left up for these pictures to show you the disc. You CAN operate it like this, but it's not recommended. You do NOT need a paper clip to hold the door open. The PS2 in these pictures is tilted forward, therefore requiring the paper clip to hold the lid open. The lid stays open by itself when the PS2 is in it's normal position. If you have the disc in correctly, the Swap Magic Discs will load like a normal PS2 game.

3) After about 25 seconds, this screen will show up on your screen saying "INSERT DISC." Open the Flip Top and remove the Swap Magic Disc (It will have stopped spinning by now). Place your Import or Backup into the PS2 like you did the Swap Magic Disc earlier. Close the lid and press the "X" Button.

Place your Import or Backup into the PS2 like you did the Swap Magic Disc earlier. Close the lid and press the "X" Button.
4) After you press "X", the LEFT SIDE and TOP of your screen will change from black to either BLUE or PINK. If it's PINK, that means the disc is either dirty, the disc isn't in correctly or your backup was burned incorrectly. If you get the PINK border, try it again. If it continues, either clean your disc or try burning another copy. If it's not spinning correctly, all I can say is "Practice makes perfect," keep trying. You'll get the hang of it.

5) If it's BLUE, that means you've got a good Import or backup, and it's starting to load. Just to note, This picture shows a copy of "Ridge Racer 5" loading. I Own the original, and it's in the picture. This is a legal procedure.

[edit] Troubleshooting

1) If you encounter a game that Swap Magic 2.0 won't play (There are a handful), please see the if it's on the Swap Magic Incompatability Chart at Swapmagicfix.com. If so, the chart will show you which method WILL play it. Hope is never lost.

2) Grinding noises when you try to load a game? Make sure the disc can spin freely. If it can, Make sure you are using the White Disc (Magnet) that came with the PS2, NOT THE VERSION THAT COMES WITH THE FLIPTOP. The PS2 magnet is stronger.
